Policy

We store medicines securely in accordance with the Medicines Act 1981.

We maintain a stock of medicines that is suitable for the services we offer.

Medicines are stored securely so they can't be accessed by unauthorised people:

• Medicines are stored in a secure medicine cupboard.
• Emergency medicines are stored in the emergency trolley.
• The emergency take-out box is stored in a cupboard in the treatment room.

Medicines are not stored, prepared or packed in areas where food and drinks are stored, prepared or consumed.

A practice nurse checks stock levels regularly:

• Routine medicines: checked weekly
• Emergency medicines: checked weekly, or after use
• Emergency take-out box: checked monthly

Reordering medicines

To order medicines, the nurses complete an MPSO form. This must be approved by a doctor before sending to the pharmacy.
